The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has reportedly increased the readiness of its ballistic missile defence system across the alliance. The move comes amid rising Iranian attacks in the Middle East, including a missile launch that briefly targeted Turkish territory before being intercepted.

The step was announced by NATO spokesperson Colonel Martin O’Donnell. He said all alliance members agreed to raise readiness following the growing threat.

“Yesterday NATO raised the ballistic missile defence posture across the alliance,” O’Donnell said in a statement shared on social media on Thursday (5 March 2026).

He noted the decision was taken after 32 NATO member states held ambassador-level talks in Brussels. In the meeting, allies agreed to maintain the defence readiness at a high level until the threat from Iran’s indiscriminate attacks across the region subsides.

“The posture will remain at the elevated level until the threat from Iran’s indiscriminate attacks across the region subsides,” he added.

However, NATO did not disclose specifics of the changes to the defence system for operational security reasons.

O’Donnell confirmed that the heightened readiness was implemented on the same day that NATO’s defence system intercepted a ballistic missile heading for Turkey.

“In under 10 minutes, NATO personnel identified the threat to the ally, confirmed the ballistic missile trajectory, alerted the land- and sea-based defence systems, and launched interceptors to destroy the threat,” he said.

Tensions in the region have risen after Iran launched retaliatory strikes against US and Israeli operations. The attack involved missiles and drones hitting several cities and infrastructure in the Middle East.
