NATO strikes seen as drama

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuter): Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Saturday described the latest air strikes by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on Bosnian Serb positions as a mere Western drama.

Mahathir was quoted by the national Bernama news agency as saying that he did not believe that NATO would continue the air attacks as it feared Serb forces might surround the peacekeeping forces of member states in Bosnia.

Serb troops have already taken scores of peacekeepers hostage as human shields against more air strikes.

Mahathir felt that NATO would bow to Serbs' demands as it was not serious and feared that it would become involved directly in the war.

He said that although Malaysia did not agree with the UN methods, it had to abide by the world body's directives. He said he would try to influence the UN but felt the world body would not listen to Malaysia.
