US President Donald Trump has complained about countries in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The reason is that they are not helping the US in the war against Iran. Trump even called NATO members “crazy countries” and “militarily broken”.

“The USA does not need anything from NATO, but ‘never forget’ this very important moment,” Trump said in a statement via the social media platform Truth Social, as reported by detikNews on Friday (27/3/2026).

During a cabinet meeting at the White House on Thursday (26/3/2026), Trump said the US is “very disappointed” with NATO.

“I will say it openly. We are very disappointed with NATO because NATO is doing absolutely nothing,” Trump said in his criticism.

NATO, Trump clarified, “will never” come to save the US. “I said 25 years ago that NATO is a paper tiger, but more importantly, we will come to save them, but they will never come to save us,” he stated.

In recent days, Trump has called on US allies, as well as US rivals including China, to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global energy supplies.

As a result of the war, transit activity in the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively restricted since early March. This has triggered global disruptions that increase shipping costs and push global oil prices higher.

Several European countries have rejected Trump’s calls, stating that the Iran conflict is a war started by Trump without consulting US allies.

Previously, Trump also emphasised that the US does not need NATO and called the alliance’s stance a “very stupid mistake”. However, Trump said he has no plans to withdraw the US from the defence alliance despite considering it a viable option.

Trump has long criticised NATO and, during his first term, according to several statements from White House officials, he openly considered pulling the US out of the post-war Western alliance.
