NATO Launches Three New Multinational Defence Projects
The Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Mark Rutte, has announced three new multinational defence initiatives while opening the 2026 NATO Summit through a defence industry forum focused on strengthening joint procurement.
In his speech at the NATO Defence Industry Forum, which served as the first official agenda of the two-day summit in Ankara, Türkiye, on Tuesday, Rutte introduced several projects aimed at bolstering the alliance’s capabilities in military air transport, intelligence, and surveillance.
The first initiative is a multinational modernisation programme with a primary focus on the Airbus A400M transport aircraft and the Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) fleet.
“A number of NATO member states will officially announce additional deliveries of Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft,” said Rutte.
He explained that the project is a step towards strengthening NATO’s strategic air transport and aerial refueling capabilities.
Rutte also announced a joint procurement project for MQ-4C Triton unmanned aerial vehicles to enhance the alliance’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.
“These additional aircraft will strengthen continuous surveillance capabilities across vast maritime regions,” he stated.
The third announcement concerns plans to replace NATO’s ageing Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) fleet. NATO member states will undertake the joint procurement of up to 10 Swedish-built Saab GlobalEye reconnaissance aircraft to replace the US-built Boeing E-3A Sentry aircraft currently used by the alliance.
The NATO Summit will continue until Wednesday (8/7), with an agenda covering increased defence investment, military support for Ukraine, and efforts to strengthen the defence industry base of member nations.
