NATO Intel: Russia Prepared to Attack Europe, Could Occur This Year
French intelligence services, a NATO member state, are currently considering autumn 2027 as a potential timeframe for a possible large-scale Russian attack. This latest threat assessment arrives much earlier than the previously evaluated scenario, which was set for 2030.
Quoting Anadolu Agency on Monday (21/09/2026), a report from France Televisions on Saturday revealed a secret note confirming that the timeline for a potential major Russian attack has indeed been moved forward. The report details that strategic infrastructure could be primary targets, including power plants and electrical grids, railways, telecommunications networks, and even drinking water facilities.
The former deputy director of French military intelligence, Alain Christienne, highlighted a scenario involving air strikes that could potentially paralyse the country. “A hypothetical attack could involve unmanned aerial vehicles carrying explosives targeting French defence industry locations,” he stated.
Furthermore, he emphasised that it would be extremely difficult to prove definitively that Russia was behind such an attack. “France currently lacks the capability to fully protect itself from such a scenario,” he said.
This alarming intelligence leak emerges just as French President Emmanuel Macron held a secret meeting on Friday with presidential candidates and political party leaders. The meeting specifically addressed what he described as increasingly intense Russian hybrid threats against France and Europe as a whole.
During the meeting, Macron ensured that the government would immediately prepare a comprehensive plan to protect critical infrastructure and sensitive sites within the nation’s defence industrial and technological bases from drone and cyber attacks.
To anticipate this potentially deadly crisis, the French government has also instructed prefects to immediately form joint security and defence teams. This comprehensive task force will involve local police, intelligence services, the military, educational authorities, business actors, and emergency services.
