NATO Deploys Fighter Jets Amid Signs of New War Escalation
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has once again raised its alert level after a drone was detected approaching Romanian territory. The situation has sparked concerns that the Russia-Ukraine war could spill over into the airspace of alliance member states.
Romania’s Ministry of Defence said on Tuesday that two Spanish Air and Space Force F-18 fighter jets were scrambled from the 57th Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base after an aerial object was detected approximately 2 miles, or 3.2 kilometres, east of Vylkove on the Ukraine-Romania border. However, the ministry did not specify whether the drone had entered Romanian airspace.
Residents in the northern part of Tulcea County were urged to prepare for the possibility of objects falling from the sky and to seek shelter immediately.
“Stay calm! Take shelter in basements or civil protection shelters. If no shelter is available, remain indoors, away from windows and exterior walls,” read a warning from Romania’s General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, as quoted by Newsweek on Wednesday (26/8/2026).
A similar warning was issued on Monday evening after two aerial objects were detected approximately 16 miles, or 25.7 kilometres, from Snake Island in the Black Sea, near the Danube Delta. Romania’s Ministry of Defence said explosions were reported on the Ukrainian side and there were no reports of Romanian airspace violations.
The incident is part of a series of events involving drones around the territory of NATO member states. Most incursions have been attributed to Russian aggression, although some allies have also noted that Ukrainian drones can veer off course due to electronic interference or jamming carried out by Moscow.
As of Tuesday, Romania’s Ministry of Defence had recorded 43 airspace violations by drones since the war in Ukraine began in February 2022. Four drones have been shot down, while 125 attacks have been recorded in the vicinity of Romania’s border.
This year alone, Romanian authorities have recorded 26 border airspace violations. The situation has prompted the NATO member state to continue increasing its air alertness, particularly as its territory directly borders Ukraine, which has become a war zone.
Meanwhile, tensions have also spread to Moldova. Ukraine’s border service said Russian forces attacked the Vynohradivka border post, which borders Moldova, using Shahed drones, while an unidentified drone was reported to have entered Moldovan airspace from the direction of Ukraine and then moved towards Romania.
In response to the incident, Romania deployed two F-16 fighter jets from Borcea Air Base as well as an IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter.
