SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: The Kayan Mentarang National Park
in East Kalimantan province is not only home to various kinds of
biodiversity but also to historic monuments, says the coordinator
of a non-governmental organization.
Kayan Mentarang Alliance coordinator Syaifuddin said the Kayan
Mentarang Park, which covers 1.3 million hectares, is the largest
national park in Southeast Asia.
The park, which covers a very wide area in Malinau and Nunukan
districts, has megalithic tombs in 12 sites, he said on Thursday.
Syaifuddin, however, expressed regret that illegal logging was
endangering the national park.
It has an extraordinary biodiversity, including rare flora and
fauna, said the coordinator of the East Kalimantan Environmental
Forum. --Antara
