Nationalist spirit needed
Nationalist spirit needed
From Suara Karya
The human rights (HAM) institution in settling national issues
arising in Indonesia applies methods that lack a sense of
nationalism. In other words, it has apparently never struggled
for national interests.
Based on the 1945 Constitution, the HAM law and the HAM
judicial procedure, the HAM institution functions not only as a
means to try rights violation cases but also a means to prevent
such violations.
Therefore, this institution should play an active role in
settling conflicts in the country, particularly in Aceh. It
should not respond to the extension of the integrated military
operation by only blaming the government. The demand by non-
government organizations that martial law in Aceh be revoked is
irrelevant. The terror launched by surviving members of the Free
Aceh Movement still requires a military presence.
Unlike in the past, when the spirit of nationalism was strong
among Indonesians, today we are ready to be pitted against each
other by external forces, even to blame and kill each other.
Instead of creating jobs or setting good examples, some
intellectuals are just provoking rancor and confusion.
With deep concern, I hope that all fellow citizens will make
the best contribution and undertake positive activities for the
advancement of the nation.
