Nationalism in time of crisis

Nationalism in time of crisis

From Neraca

We need to resuscitate the spirit of nationalism that was
prevalent during colonialism up to the start of independence. The
hard years ahead will drain our energy.

We must face the future together, as one nation, with the
spirit of nationalism. This spirit is not limited to senseless
slogans and rhetorics.

There is nothing wrong with exchanging our dollars for rupiah.
There is nothing wrong with donating our valuables to help
relieve the crisis. The most important thing is to make us
sensitive to the feeling of owning our beloved country.

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has given a good
example in recommending food sufficiency for every household by
planting sweet potatoes in the garden.

Now, consider the IMF aid.

We perceive there is the spirit of nationalism in a citizen of
the state who stands on his own and does not cede his
"sovereignty" to the IMF.

We must accept the consequences of the IMF aid. It does not
mean that we do not have our point of view. Many things forwarded
by the IMF require a critical attitude by us, as nationals, who
have obtained independence by a struggle without end.

We do not need to be hypocritical and reject the IMF aid, but
we very much need to be wary in accepting and implementing the
reform program which is said to be able to restore this country.

Therefore, apart from hard work by the government, restoration
efforts also need the community's attitude as stated above.

At least, those living in the big cities should start being
aware that we do not live individually. As a nation, we are in
need of a solidarity spirit to give us a strong bargaining
position not only in facing the IMF but any country that acts
arbitrarily towards us.
