National Transport Day 2026: Governor Khofifah Announces Free Trans Jatim Services
East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa has announced that Trans Jatim service fares will be free for one day on Thursday (17/9) to commemorate National Transport Day (Harhubnas) 2026. The free fare applies to all Trans Jatim services across Corridors 1-7 of the Gerbangkertasusila region and Corridor 1 of Malang Raya. This programme does not apply to Trans Jatim Luxury services.
Governor Khofifah stated that the free fare is a form of appreciation from the East Java Provincial Government to the community, as well as an invitation to try and become accustomed to using public transport. The programme also implements the theme of Harhub_nas 2026, “Connecting Indonesia for a More Advanced Future.”
“In commemoration of National Transport Day, we invite the public to enjoy Trans Jatim services for free. Please take this opportunity to travel using safe, comfortable, and affordable public transport,” said Khofifah at the Grahadi State Building, Surabaya, on Thursday (17/9).
Governor Khofifah emphasised that the free fare policy is not merely part of the Harhubnas celebration. The programme is also an effort to introduce the benefits of mass public transport to a wider audience. According to her, the experience of using Trans Jatim is expected to foster trust and encourage a change in public habits from using private vehicles to using public transport.
“This programme is not just about providing free trips. We want more people to recognise, try, and ultimately make public transport their primary choice for daily activities,” she said.
Khofifah explained that increased use of public transport would benefit both the community and the environment. Reducing the use of private vehicles can help suppress congestion and air pollution, as well as improve the efficiency of public mobility.
“Switching to public transport means contributing to solving shared problems. A single Trans Jatim bus can reduce dozens of private vehicles on the road,” she asserted.
The use of mass public transport is also one of the efforts to reduce the risk of traffic accidents influenced by the high mobility of private vehicles on the highway. “The more people use public transport, the greater our opportunity to reduce congestion, suppress air pollution, and build safer mobility,” she explained.
Furthermore, Khofifah stated that the provision of public transport plays a vital role in strengthening connectivity between regions in East Java. The existence of Trans Jatim, which connects various areas in the Gerbangkertasusila and Malang Raya regions, supports community mobility towards centres of education, offices, trade, public services, and economic growth centres.
“Public transport connects people with various opportunities. Through integrated services, access to schools, campuses, workplaces, economic centres, and public services becomes increasingly easy,” she said.
This aligns with the theme of Harhubnas 2026, which places connectivity as the foundation for realising a more advanced future for Indonesia. Khofifah noted that the meaning of connecting Indonesia is not only related to infrastructure development. Connectivity must be able to open access, smooth mobility, and reduce regional disparities.
“Transport connects regions while connecting people with opportunities to grow. Therefore, transport services must continue to be developed so they are more accessible, integrated, and reach more people,” she emphasised.
The East Java Provincial Government continues to develop a public transport system oriented towards improving service quality and community mobility needs. This development is carried out by strengthening connectivity between regions and integration with other modes of transport.
Therefore, the East Java Provincial Government continues to strengthen service integration and intermodal connections. However, Khofifah reminded that the best service will not be sustainable without public participation.
“The government continues to strengthen services. Now it is the community’s turn to support this by building a culture of using public transport. The sustainability of public transport is in our hands together,” she invited.
On the other hand, Khofifah emphasised that the development of facilities and service networks must be accompanied by a culture of using public transport. Public participation is a crucial factor in building a sustainable public transport system.
Khofifah also urged the public using the free services to maintain order, cleanliness, and Trans Jatim facilities. Passengers are requested to follow the instructions of officers and give priority to the elderly, pregnant women, persons with disabilities, and passengers travelling with children.
“Please utilise this free service in an orderly manner and continue to maintain mutual comfort. Trans Jatim is a public facility that we must care for together,” she messaged.
During the 2026 National Transport Day commemoration, Khofifah also expressed her appreciation to all transport personnel who have worked to maintain connectivity and the smoothness of community mobility in East Java.
“Happy National Transport Day 2026. Thank you to all transport personnel who have dedicated themselves to keeping the community connected,” she said.
“Hopefully, this free Trans Jatim service will bring the community closer to public transport. Let us strengthen connectivity and together connect Indonesia for a more advanced future.”
