The tagline ‘Safe Homecoming, Happy Family’ has been affirmed by the Head of the National Traffic Police Corps (Kakorlantas), Inspector General Agus Suryonugroho, in anticipation of the 2026 Lebaran homecoming and return traffic flows. The tagline follows guidance from National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, carrying the message that safety during travel is the key to ensuring happiness when families gather for the festive season.

To realise this vision, Inspector General Agus has been finalising preparations ahead of Operation Ketupat 2026. Following his inspection of the Trans-Sumatra route the previous day, he conducted a direct review of KM 81 on the Cipali Toll Road on Tuesday to verify the readiness of routes and security arrangements for this year’s homecoming.

The route inspection, carried out in collaboration with stakeholders, was conducted in accordance with directives from National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo. Inspector General Agus sought to ensure that travellers’ safety is guaranteed, in line with the 2026 homecoming tagline.

“The state is present, all stakeholders are present. There is one programme we did not implement last year — vehicle checkpoint inspections. We will check the roadworthiness of buses in particular, we will check the drivers, and we will also check the health of the drivers,” said Inspector General Agus at KM 81 of the Cipali Toll Road on Tuesday (24 February 2026).

One of the innovations in Operation Ketupat 2026 is the conversion of several former rest areas into vehicle checkpoint posts. These locations will serve as integrated inspection points for vehicles.

“This used to be a rest area, but we will repurpose it as a vehicle checkpoint. So ‘Safe Homecoming, Happy Family’ is not merely about the journey there and back — it is about ensuring the safety of road users until they reach their destination,” explained the former Deputy Chief of Central Java Police.

The primary focus of inspections will be passenger buses and travel vehicles. In addition to the physical condition of the fleet, officers will also examine administrative compliance and conduct on-site driver health checks.

These checkpoint inspections will involve various relevant agencies. Inspector General Agus explained that each stakeholder has a specific role to ensure layered security.

“There will be collaboration — the President Director of Jasa Raharja will set up a post here. We as the police will check administrative documents such as driving licences and vehicle registration, the health authorities will check driver fitness, and the Ministry of Transport will inspect vehicle roadworthiness. We will determine the technical details — whether it will be random checks or all bus vehicles,” he added.

Beyond vehicle roadworthiness, the Traffic Police Corps has also prepared strategies to ease congestion bottlenecks, particularly at KM 60-62 of the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road. The Japek II South Toll Road has been prepared as a strategic alternative route.

“The Japek South route has been confirmed for use during the return flow. For the homecoming flow, once we have checked and confirmed it is ready, we will also open it to split the traffic at KM 60 or 62,” said Inspector General Agus.

Regarding infrastructure, Inspector General Agus confirmed that coordination with the Ministry of Public Works and Housing and toll road operators is ongoing. The target is for all repairs to damaged and potholed roads, on both toll and arterial routes, to be completed before the peak homecoming period.

“Damaged and potholed roads have been repaired. By H-7, based on yesterday’s meeting with the Ministry of Public Works, including toll road management arrangements, everything should hopefully be completed. We also drove around to check all the arterial roads yesterday,” he concluded.

After inspecting KM 81 Cipali, the Traffic Police Chief was scheduled to continue his review of the Cileunyi and Cisumdawu toll road sections to verify the readiness of connecting routes from West Java to Central Java.
