National Police Traffic Corps Says Digital Driving Licence Rollout Receives Positive Public Response, Eases Access
The implementation of digital driving licences (SIM Digital) has received a positive response from the public. The innovation developed by the Indonesian National Police (Polri) is considered to facilitate public access to driving documents in a practical, secure, and efficient manner through digital devices. Various segments of society have appreciated the digital innovation carried out by Polri through technology-based public service transformation. Beyond easing access to driving licence documents, the digital service is also deemed capable of improving transparency and effectiveness, as well as supporting the reduction in the use of physical documents. The Director of Registration and Identification (Dirregident) of the National Police Traffic Corps, Brigadier General Wibowo, expressed his appreciation for the public’s support of the digital-based service transformation. “We thank the public for the positive response and trust placed in the digital SIM service. This support motivates us to continue improving service quality that is easy, fast, transparent, and accountable,” said Wibowo. According to him, the digital SIM is part of the modernisation of registration and identification (Regident) services, which not only provides convenience to the public but also strengthens the accuracy of police data. Polri’s authority to issue and manage SIMs and Vehicle Registration Certificates (STNK) has a strong legal basis as stipulated in Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Road Traffic and Transportation. Polri is authorised to carry out driver registration and identification, motor vehicle registration, and traffic law enforcement. Furthermore, Polri’s authority in managing SIMs and STNKs has also been reinforced through various rulings of the Constitutional Court (MK), which affirm that Polri is the legitimate and authorised institution in administering driver and motor vehicle registration and identification in Indonesia. Wibowo explained that the Regident function is not only administrative, but also plays an important role as part of police forensics. SIM and STNK data serve as strategic instruments in supporting investigations, identifying perpetrators of crime, tracking vehicles resulting from criminal acts, and providing evidence in the law enforcement process. “Digital transformation in the Regident field not only improves the quality of public services, but also strengthens accurate data support for law enforcement and police forensic functions,” he said.
