National Police Responds to Demonstrations Over Brimob Officer's Fatal Assault on Student, Ready to Conduct Evaluation

The Indonesian National Police (Polri) has responded to demonstrations that followed an incident in Tual, where a member of the Mobile Brigade (Brimob), Bripda MS, assaulted and killed a junior high school student, AT (14). Polri has stated that it is open to criticism and ready to conduct an evaluation.

“Regarding the incident in Tual, which has triggered these events, we understand the feelings of disappointment and anger from the public. However, we urge everyone to remain calm because the Chief of Police has firmly committed to addressing this issue. Polri leadership at all levels has firmly committed to taking strict action if any member of Polri engages in actions or behaviours that violate our code of ethics, especially the expectations and trust of the public,” said the Head of the Polri’s Public Relations Division, Inspector General Johnny Eddizon Isir, during a press conference at Polri Headquarters on Wednesday (25 February 2026).

He called on the public to monitor the enforcement of the law against MS. He stated that the decision of the ethics hearing, which imposed the sanction of dismissal without honour on MS, demonstrates Polri’s seriousness.

“Therefore, we urge everyone to monitor this process. The ethics hearing’s decision is concrete evidence of this firm commitment. Expressing opinions is normal, and we greatly respect that. This is part of the control mechanism for Polri as a public institution, a civilian institution that is open,” he said.

He also responded to questions regarding proposals to withdraw Brimob from civilian security duties. These proposals came from several community groups, such as ICJR and YLBHI. Isir stated that his department welcomes all input and criticism from the public.

“Polri, as an open institution, is grateful and appreciates all input. We acknowledge that there are weaknesses. We are currently conducting an evaluation,” said Isir.

He stated that Brimob is deployed to support territorial units in critical areas. He explained that Indonesia’s geographical and social characteristics are very diverse.

“Especially when we are on duty in the eastern part of Indonesia, this is very helpful,” he explained.

Isir said that Brimob’s role is to guarantee security, social order, and the safety of the public. According to him, the incident in Tual occurred because of MS’s actions, which have been subject to strict sanctions.

“This incident is not part of the structure. It is an action at the individual level,” he said.
