National Police Commission Urges Metro Jaya Police to Unmask Intellectual Masterminds Behind 27 August Unrest
The National Police Commission (Kompolnas) has officially urged the Metro Jaya Regional Police to fully uncover the alleged intellectual masterminds behind the unrest that took place on 27 August 2026. The focus of the investigation is expected to cover aspects ranging from mass mobilisation to the funding flows that triggered the riots, particularly during the night.
Kompolnas Commissioner, Choirul Anam, emphasised that this disclosure is crucial for mapping all responsible parties. According to him, there are similarities in the patterns between the 27 August 2026 unrest and similar events that occurred in 2025.
“We continue to urge Metro Jaya Police to expose who the intellectual actors are behind the events of the 27th, especially during the night. There is a pattern we can sense on the ground that is similar between 2025 and 2026,” Anam stated in his briefing in Jakarta on Thursday (3/9).
Anam stressed that the police must not stop at the prosecution of perpetrators on the ground. The investigation must reach the supporting structures that enable masses to move in an organised manner. He assessed that indications of planning were clearly visible from the dynamics on the ground.
Kompolnas also expressed appreciation for the swift actions taken by the General Criminal Investigation Directorate of the Metro Jaya Regional Police, which released sketches of two men suspected of being involved in the assault of citizens in the Pejompongan area during the unrest. However, Anam reminded that the arrest of physical perpetrators must be followed by proof of the roles played by the organisers behind the scenes.
Previously, the Director of General Criminal Investigation of the Metro Jaya Regional Police, Kombes Pol Iman Imanuddin, stated that his department is working hard to deepen the investigation into the profiles of the financiers and the mobilisers of the rioters. Based on the results of the crime scene investigation and witness examinations, the actions of the perpetrators indicate planned mobilisation.
To date, the police have named 4t7 individuals as suspects related to the destruction of public facilities and assault. Additionally, three individuals, identified by the initials FR, MH, and FM, have been arrested specifically for the destruction of CCTV cameras belonging to the Jakarta Provincial Government, which was allegedly done to erase traces of the mass action.
