National Police Commission urges collaborative approach to resolve child abuse case in Tual
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Police Commission (Kompolnas) is encouraging collaboration between the police and local government authorities in resolving the alleged child abuse case in Tual, Maluku, involving a member of the Mobile Brigade (Brimob), Bripda MS. “Considering the background of the incident in Tual, I believe that resolving it requires more than just the police; it needs the responsibility of all elements of society, including, or specifically, the local and provincial governments,” said Kompolnas member Mochammad Choirul Anam to ANTARA in Jakarta on Tuesday. According to Anam, a more comprehensive approach is needed to address the issue because it involves not only violence by a Brimob officer but also other dynamics. “This requires a social approach, an economic approach, conflict resolution, economic empowerment, and so on,” he said. Therefore, according to Anam, to prevent similar cases from recurring, the involvement and responsibility of all parties, especially the local and provincial governments, are necessary. “Let’s work together with the police so that the problems that occur in society, including the police’s response, can be managed well,” he said. “We will have a dialogue with various elements there to ensure a deeper understanding of the root causes of this incident,” he added. The Maluku Regional Police has officially dismissed Bripda MS (Mesias Viktor Siahaya), a Brimob officer who is a suspect in the alleged abuse case of a student in Tual, who later died. Bripda MS was found to have committed a disgraceful act and violated the Code of Ethics of the Indonesian National Police. However, Bripda MS is still considering the decision and has been given time to file an appeal. The initial patrol was in the Mangga Dua Complex, Langgur, until around 2:00 AM local time. Then, it moved to Fiditan Village, Tual City, after receiving reports from residents about alleged assaults in the Tete Pancing area. At the location, the suspect and several officers got out of their vehicles and provided security. About 10 minutes later, two motorcycles sped past from Ngadi towards Tete Pancing. The suspect allegedly swung his tactical helmet as a signal. However, the helmet hit the victim, AT (14), on the right temple, causing him to fall off the motorcycle. The victim was then taken to the Karel Sadsuitubun Regional Hospital in Langgur for medical treatment. However, at 1:00 PM local time, the victim was pronounced dead.
