National Police Chief Warns of Divisive Narratives Amid Democratic Freedoms
Jakarta — National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has emphasised the importance of upholding democratic values, whilst warning that public activities must not be infiltrated by narratives that could divide national unity.
“Nevertheless, what I always stress is that such activities must not be infiltrated by matters that could divide the nation’s unity and cohesion, which could subsequently cause deterioration,” Sigit stated in a statement on Wednesday (18 March 2026).
Sigit made the remarks whilst attending a Ramadan outreach safari at the Al-Adzim Mosque of the Riau Regional Police Headquarters on Tuesday (17 March 2026).
During the event, Sigit emphasised that democracy must continue to operate and be respected by all elements of society.
According to him, unity and cohesion represent the key to facing various national challenges, including global dynamics and the demographic dividend momentum that Indonesia will experience.
“Amidst the diversity of differences that exist, there is one thing we must remain united on: to ensure that Indonesia truly becomes a nation in accordance with our vision of becoming a major power, positioning itself at third or fourth place in the world,” Sigit said.
The Ramadan outreach safari was attended by various societal elements, ranging from religious leaders, academics, labour unions, civil society organisations, students, and online motorcycle taxi communities.
In addition to conducting outreach, the National Police Chief also inaugurated the renovation of the Al-Adzim Mosque at the Riau Regional Police Headquarters and formally established the Riau Task Force for Handling Dismissals and the Presisi online motorcycle taxi community for law enforcement and order.
He also highlighted the importance of improving human resource quality so that Indonesia can optimally utilise its natural resources and achieve economic independence.
On another note, Sigit warned that the dynamic global situation must be anticipated collectively.
The Government, he said, continues to make efforts to mitigate and maintain the national economic conditions.
He assured that the National Police would continue to strengthen partnerships with the community through a community policing approach to maintain law enforcement and order stability as the foundation of national development and economic growth.
