National Police Chief: Traffic Accidents During 2026 Eid Period Drop by 7.8 Percent

Jakarta (ANTARA) - National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated that the number of traffic accidents during the Eid al-Fitr homecoming and return period in 2026 experienced a decline of up to 7.8 percent compared to the previous year. Sigit expressed gratitude to the public and involved personnel for their role in suppressing the traffic accident rate amid a 20.49 percent increase in the number of homecomers, reaching 2.9 million people from 2025. “Of course, I also thank the public and all members who this year managed to keep the accident figures, especially those related to fatalities, reduced,” Sigit said after monitoring the return flow of Eid at Bakauheni Port, Lampung, on Saturday. The four-star general explained that the number of accident cases resulting in fatalities also decreased by 112 cases, with a total of 265 fatalities. On that occasion, Sigit also advised the entire public undertaking return journeys to ensure their physical condition and vehicles. He reminded the public who feel fatigued from long journeys not to force themselves and to rest at places provided by the government. “Especially those still facing quite long journeys, be really careful. Rest areas and buffer zones have been prepared by the government; utilise them well,” he said. The former Head of Criminal Investigation urged ensuring that the public can continue their journey only when fully refreshed after resting en route. “So that when the condition has recovered, back to fit, please continue the journey so that everyone can truly reach their destination safely,” he said. Regarding the return flow to Jakarta and its surroundings, Sigit said that as of that morning, the number of vehicles that had returned to Jakarta reached 2.5 million vehicles. He estimated that the number of homecomers yet to return was only 13 percent remaining, or 385,000 vehicles. “This means that overall, we see that the peak return flow has been passed, and only 13.07 percent remains to be handled,” he revealed. “Hopefully, we can continue to maintain and manage all this so that the public who went home and returned can enjoy the journey and arrive home safely,” he added.
