National Police Chief: Pilgrimage to Former Presidents' Tombs an Effort to Absorb National Leadership Values

National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated that a series of pilgrimages to the graves of former presidents ahead of the 80th Bhayangkara Day represents an effort by the National Police to absorb the values of national leadership, serving as a guide in carrying out duties of service to the community. While visiting the grave of Indonesia’s first president, Soekarno, in Blitar, East Java, on Saturday, Sigit said the tradition aims to explore the spirit of struggle of past leaders to strengthen the institution’s commitment to safeguarding the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). “This morning, we made a pilgrimage to the grave of the late President Gus Dur and, alhamdulillah, we are now carrying out a pilgrimage to the grave of the late President Soekarno. After this, we will continue to the grave of President Soeharto and finally conclude at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery,” Sigit said in a statement received in Jakarta. According to the National Police Chief, the values bequeathed by the nation’s leaders hold significant meaning for the National Police in carrying out the state’s mandate and responding to the expectations of the public. “This series of activities is part of our tradition to absorb and explore the values of the nation’s leaders, which is very important, especially for the National Police institution. We have a mandate to continue to uphold what has been bequeathed, the values that have been given by our former presidents, our former national leaders, to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia and also to the National Police institution,” he said. Sigit stressed that these leadership values must be preserved and passed on as a spirit of dedication for the National Police in carrying out its functions of protecting, sheltering, and serving the public. “This also becomes a strength, a positive thing for us to continue to develop as a spirit for the National Police institution, so that we can continue to carry out the mandate of the institution, the mandate of the people, the nation, and the state, to perform all these duties and responsibilities as best as possible,” he said. The pilgrimage to Bung Karno’s grave is part of a series of activities to welcome the 80th Bhayangkara Day, which is commemorated on 1 July 2026. Previously, the National Police Chief made a pilgrimage to the grave of the fourth President of the Republic of Indonesia, K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid, also known as Gus Dur, in Jombang, East Java.
