National Police Chief leads Police Day of Struggle ceremony, reminds of fighting spirit

National Police Chief General Pol. Listyo Sigit Prabowo led the 2026 Police Day of Struggle ceremony at the Special Police Monument in Surabaya, East Java, on Friday and reminded personnel of the fighting spirit through the reading of the Police Proclamation text.

According to an official Police statement received in Jakarta, the re-reading of the Police Proclamation text serves as a reminder to all personnel that the fighting spirit of their predecessors must continue to be inherited and translated according to the challenges of each era.

In the early days of independence, the Police’s struggle was directed at defending the nation’s sovereignty.

However, today the same spirit is realised through efforts to maintain security and public order, uphold the law, and provide protection, guardianship, and service to the community.

The Police Day of Struggle momentum also serves as a reflection for all personnel to continue upholding the values of courage, dedication, loyalty, integrity, and the never-give-up spirit inherited from their predecessors.

These values are important capital for the Bhayangkara Corps to answer increasingly complex task challenges while meeting public expectations for better Police services.

The 2026 Police Day of Struggle ceremony was attended by Police ranks and 203 invited guests from various elements, including Police Headquarters, the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum, the Surabaya City Government, religious and community figures, students, academics, veterans, and the extended Police family.

It is known that Police Day of Struggle is commemorated every 21 August, coinciding with the historic event of the Police Proclamation declared in Surabaya on 21 August 1945.

This commemoration is a momentum to remember the struggle of the Surabaya Special Police while reviving the spirit of Police service in maintaining security, supporting development, and advancing the nation.

History records that on 20 August 1945, Police Inspector Muhammad Jasin together with members of the Surabaya Special Police agreed on a statement of loyalty to the Republic of Indonesia while drafting the text of the Police Proclamation.

A day later, Muhammad Jasin led a roll call at the Surabaya Special Police Headquarters and read the Police Proclamation, which was followed by all its members.
