National Police Chief Highlights the Dangers of Deepfakes and AI, Hopes Media Will Clarify Information
The National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, spoke about the challenges behind the development of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and deepfakes. He warned about the dangers of misinformation and disinformation that can divide the nation.
“In the current situation, we all know how extraordinary the development of information technology has been,” said General Sigit in his speech at the Polri’s Iftar event with the press at the Main Building of the Polri Headquarters, South Jakarta, Wednesday (25/2/2026).
General Sigit said that the Global Risk Report predicted that one of the issues that would have a global impact was the problem of misinformation and disinformation. According to him, this is not only happening on a global scale, but also in the current domestic situation.
“Of course, this is a challenge for all of us,” he said.
Therefore, Sigit said that the public needs mainstream media as a provider of factual information that can be trusted so that the public is not overwhelmed and carried away by misinformation or disinformation, which is happening extensively, especially on social media.
“Of course, our hope, all of our hopes, is that the media, as one of the functions we expect, can provide that enlightenment,” he said.
“Our hope is that the media, as one of the control tools, one of the communication tools that represents the public’s voice, can continue to represent the public to be a bridge, a communication tool, especially for us, or for institutions, so that we can continue to listen to what the public’s expectations are, which are voiced through the media,” continued General Sigit.
He hopes that the synergy between the media and the Polri will continue to be maintained. The goal is that police responses in the field are not based on their own desires, but are based on the real needs of the community.
“So that in the future, our responses are not responses based on our own desires, but our responses are truly responses in the field that then move because we listen to the public’s voice, which is voiced by the media,” he concluded.
