National Police Chief Expresses Deep Condolences Over Student's Death at Hands of Brimob Officer
A student in Tual, Maluku, identified by the initials AT, was allegedly beaten to death by a Mobile Brigade (Brimob) officer, First Class Private MS. National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo expressed his deep condolences to the victim’s family and the wider community over the incident.
“I express my deepest condolences to the entire family of the victim and the community over what has occurred,” General Sigit told reporters on Monday (23/2/2026).
General Sigit ordered that the case involving First Class Private MS be thoroughly investigated both ethically and criminally. He affirmed that justice for the victim must be upheld.
“I have ordered that the case be thoroughly investigated both ethically and criminally, and to ensure proportionate punishment for the perpetrator and to uphold justice for the victim’s family,” General Sigit said.
General Sigit expressed anger upon hearing of the incident, stating that it had tarnished the dignity of the Brimob institution, which is supposed to protect the public.
“Just as the victim’s family and the community feel, I am angry to hear that this incident occurred. This clearly tarnishes the dignity of the Brimob institution, which is supposed to protect the public,” General Sigit said.
Previously, the National Police had publicly apologised regarding the alleged assault carried out by Brimob officer First Class Private MS against a student with the initials AT, resulting in the student’s death in Tual City, Maluku. The police expressed deep grief over the victim’s passing.
National Police Public Relations Division Head Inspector General Johnny Eddizon Isir affirmed that the police institution deeply regretted the incident and conveyed profound empathy to the victim’s family.
“The National Police shares deep grief over the victim’s passing and empathises with the victim’s extended family over the incident,” Isir said in a statement on Saturday (21/2/2026).
He conveyed an apology to the victim’s family and the community. Isir emphasised that the act of violence committed by the individual officer was a deviant individual action and did not represent the National Police institution.
“The National Police apologises for the actions of this individual police member, which are not in line with the values of Tribrata and Catur Prasetya,” he said.
Isir stated that the National Police would ensure the legal process against the Brimob officer would be conducted transparently. He guaranteed that action would be taken both criminally and ethically.
“The National Police is firmly committed to the law enforcement process and the code of ethics against the individual personnel involved, in a transparent and accountable manner,” he affirmed.
