National Police Chief Explains Why Jakarta is Guarded by a Three-Star General
The National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, explained the reason why the position of Chief of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police is now held by a high-ranking officer with the rank of a three-star general or Commissioner General (Komjen). According to him, this step is a follow-up to the directive from President Prabowo Subianto. Listyo said that this directive also applies to the position of Commander of the Jakarta Military Command (Pangdam Jaya), which is now led by a high-ranking Indonesian Army officer with the rank of Lieutenant General (Letjen). “This is a follow-up to the President’s directive that in Jakarta, the Pangdam and Kapolda should be three-star generals,” said Listyo in Jakarta, Thursday (14/5), quoted from Antara. With this policy, the current Chief of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Asep Edi Suheri, has officially been promoted from Inspector General (Irjen) to Commissioner General (Komjen). The promotion was confirmed by the Head of Public Relations of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Commissioner Pol Budi Hermanto. He stated that the change in Asep’s rank was based on Presidential Decree of the Republic of Indonesia Number 38/POLRI/YEAR 2026 dated May 13, 2026. “It is true that the current Chief of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police holds the rank of Commissioner General of Police based on Presidential Decree of the Republic of Indonesia Number 38/POLRI/YEAR 2026 dated May 13, 2026,” said Budi. Meanwhile, the promotion of the Pangdam Jaya was carried out earlier in March 2026. The Pangdam Jaya, Deddy Suryadi, was promoted from Major General (Mayjen) to Lieutenant General. With this change, Jakarta is now the only region in Indonesia where the Polda (Regional Police) and Kodam (Military Command) are led by three-star generals. Asep is a graduate of the Police Academy (Akpol) 1994 and has extensive experience in the field of investigation and law enforcement. Before serving as Chief of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police in 2025, he had held several strategic positions, starting from Chief of the Cirebon City Police, Chief of the Tangerang Police, to Deputy Chief of the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit (Wakabareskrim Polri). His career at the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit (Bareskrim Polri) was also quite long, including as Deputy Director of Special Economic Crimes in 2020, Director of Special Cyber Crimes in 2021, and Deputy Chief of the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit (Wakabareskrim Polri) in 2022. Asep was appointed as Chief of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police through Telegram Number ST/1764/VIII/KEP./2025, replacing Karyoto who was appointed as Head of the National Police’s Security Maintenance Agency (Kabaharkam Polri).
