National Police Chief Explains Polri's Role in Supporting Food Self-Sufficiency

National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated that the Indonesian National Police (Polri) has a duty to support national strategic policy programmes. General Sigit noted that food self-sufficiency is included within these strategic programmes.

“I believe that, at a glance, we can see our duties to support programmes and strategic policies for the national interest,” said the Police Chief following a plenary session for the ratification of the Police Bill at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (9/6/2026).

General Sigit stated that food self-sufficiency is currently a primary focus for President Prabowo Subianto. According to him, the government aims to reduce dependency on imports.

“I believe food self-sufficiency, especially in the current situation, is certainly a priority for the President,” he said. “He wants to eliminate dependency on imports and ensure that moving forward, Indonesia can be self-reliant and meet the needs of the community to ensure the success of the food self-sufficiency programme.”

Consequently, he stated that President Prabowo wants the National Police to play a role in supporting programmes that are strategic to the national interest.

On the same occasion, Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights Eddy Hiariej explained that the Police Bill clarifies the functions of the National Police, one of which is the service function. “The Bill states that this is an example of the service function, because the function of the police worldwide is to protect and to serve. Therefore, it falls under the scope of service,” said Eddy.

Previously, the House of Representatives (DPR RI) ratified the revision to the Law on the Third Amendment to Law Number 2 of 2002 concerning the Indonesian National Police. This decision was made during the 21st plenary session of the fifth session of the 2025-2026 legislative period. The meeting was held in the plenary hall of the Nusantara II Building, Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (9/6/2026). The ratification took place during the second-level discussion agenda, which was also attended by government representatives and National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabamin.

“Is the Bill regarding the Third Amendment to Law Number 2 of 2002 concerning the Indonesian National Police approved to be ratified into Law?” asked Dasco. “Agreed,” replied the session participants, followed by the striking of the gavel to signal ratification.
