President of the Confederation of All Indonesian Workers’ Unions (KSPSI) Andi Gani Nena Wea said his organisation was very proud that National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo had agreed to become chairman of the KSPSI advisory board.

Andi Gani stated that KSPSI would continue to take to the streets in protest, despite the Police Chief’s role as advisory board chairman. However, he urged workers staging demonstrations to demand their rights to do so peacefully and in an orderly manner.

“We at KSPSI are very proud that the Police Chief is willing to become Chairman of the KSPSI Advisory Board. This means the Police Chief oversees millions of KSPSI member workers. We are the largest workers’ confederation,” Andi Gani said in his remarks at an event at PT Victory Chinglu Indonesia, Pasar Kemis, Tangerang Regency, on Monday (16/2).

“Therefore, colleagues, since our Advisory Board Chairman is the Police Chief, we will continue to carry out protests peacefully. Do you agree to protest in an orderly and conducive manner? I believe our colleagues are already very mature,” he continued.

At the same event, General Sigit expressed his support for workers. The Police Chief reiterated the National Police’s commitment to championing workers’ rights.

“On this 53rd anniversary, our hope is that the struggle of all colleagues, the struggle of our fellow workers to achieve worker prosperity, naturally becomes our shared endeavour. Therefore, the National Police will certainly continue to support what our fellow workers are fighting for,” Sigit said.

Sigit said the government also wanted industrial relations to function well. Conducive industrial relations were expected to ensure company operations could continue running so that workers could also achieve prosperity.

“And this is certainly our shared hope. Therefore, we also want to encourage a business climate and investment climate in Indonesia that can truly grow, so as to open up the widest possible employment opportunities,” he said.

He also instructed the National Police’s Labour Affairs Desk to continue providing assistance to all workers, particularly those who had become victims of redundancies.

“We all want whatever happens to be mitigated as much as possible so that it does not impact our fellow workers. The labour affairs desk must truly provide the best possible service to fellow workers, especially those affected by redundancies,” he said.
