National Police Chief Assures Aceh Situation Under Control After Crescent Star Flag Raising
National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has spoken about the situation in Aceh following the incident involving the raising of the crescent star flag. General Sigit assured that the situation in Tanah Rencong is under control.
“Several activities that have emerged in recent times in several regions have been addressed by all ranks, and the situation is now entirely under control,” said Sigit at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday (17/8/2026).
On the occasion of Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day, Sigit extended his congratulations on the anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia’s independence. He called on all citizens to safeguard Indonesia’s diversity and pluralism.
“This is a day of independence celebrated by all Indonesian people, as the spirit of independence is about how we build the nation, and we understand that our nation is a plural nation, a diverse nation, a nation made up of different islands, ethnic groups, religions, and ethnicities,” said Sigit.
Sigit believes that this diversity and pluralism are Indonesia’s strength. He also offered prayers for Indonesia on this Independence Day occasion.
“Yet all of this forms a single unity, and if we can truly continue to safeguard it, it will become a strength for the Indonesian nation to keep growing, to realise the nation’s ideals as stated in the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution,” said Sigit.
“Of course, we all pray that Indonesia and our people will continue to advance to realise our shared vision towards a Golden Indonesia 2045,” he added.
Army Chief of Staff General Maruli Simanjuntak previously expressed support for the National Police in securing and enforcing the law in Aceh. This statement followed the raising of the crescent star flag in the Aceh region.
“We have prepared to address all of that, and it is already underway. Everyone is legally accountable,” said Maruli at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday (17/8).
Maruli said there is no special handling in Aceh regarding the raising of the crescent star flag. The Army supports law enforcement by the police.
“Yes, we support the police in enforcing the law,” he stressed.
