National One-Way Scheme Likely to be Extended, Traffic Corps Awaits Evaluation
The Head of the Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps, Inspector General of Police Agus Suryonugroho, has stated that the implementation of the national one-way scheme during the Lebaran homecoming traffic flow has the potential to be extended, depending on the results of daily field evaluations. This policy is prepared to anticipate the still-high surge of vehicles from Jakarta heading to various destinations. He explained that the national one-way scheme has been designed in a Joint Ministerial Decree (SKB) with an estimated peak flow on 17-18 March 2026. The dynamics of vehicle movement necessitate real-time evaluations. “The national one-way on the 17th and 18th is a scenario estimated for the peak flow,” said Agus at the Traffic Corps Command Centre in Cikampek, Thursday (19/3/2026) early WIB. He mentioned that there is still a significant remaining movement of vehicles from Jakarta. This condition forms the basis for the Traffic Corps to open the possibility of extending the traffic engineering. Evaluations are conducted based on direct monitoring in the field as well as continuously updated traffic data. Decisions are made considering the smoothness of traffic flow and the safety of road users. “With the remaining percentage of vehicles still in Jakarta, we will see. If tomorrow it is still quite high, we will continue the national one-way up to Km 414 in Central Java,” said Agus. The Traffic Corps has implemented traffic engineering gradually since the beginning of the homecoming period. Contraflow and partial one-way were first enforced before being expanded to a national one-way. The acceleration of the national one-way implementation was carried out after a significant increase in vehicle volume was observed. Parameters such as traffic counting serve as references in determining the timing of implementation. “And today it has already been accelerated for the homecoming flow national one-way,” said Agus. On the peak homecoming night (Wednesday), the vehicle volume was projected to reach 250,000 units. This figure is an increase compared to the previous day, which was around 221,000 vehicles.
