National Nutrition Agency Mandates Waste Management for Nutrition Fulfilment Service Units in Free Nutritious Meals Programme
JAKARTA - The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) has mandated that every Nutrition Fulfilment Service Unit (SPPG) in Indonesia manage waste in the implementation of the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme. This policy is regulated in BGN Regulation No. 1 of 2026, which covers the handling of food leftovers, rubbish, and domestic wastewater. “This regulation is important for safeguarding public health,” said Dadan in his statement, quoted on Friday (20/3/2026). He emphasised that the regulation represents a crucial step to ensure the MBG programme is not only effective in meeting nutritional needs but also considers environmental and sanitation aspects. “To avoid environmental pollution and ensure that food hygiene and sanitation principles are truly implemented,” he explained. Dadan clarified that this rule follows up on Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 115 of 2025 on the Governance of the Free Nutritious Meals Programme. That Perpres mandates more comprehensive programme governance, including waste and food leftover management. “SPPG are not only tasked with providing nutritious food but also ensuring that the entire process, including the waste produced, is managed well and responsibly,” he said. Furthermore, Dadan stressed that food leftovers in the MBG programme are not merely waste but part of a system that must be managed efficiently to prevent squandering. He also opened opportunities for SPPG to collaborate with local governments or third parties in waste and rubbish management, to optimise implementation on the ground according to each region’s conditions. With this regulation, BGN aims to ensure the MBG programme is not only focused on improving public nutrition but also aligns with environmental sustainability principles.
