National Human Rights Commission urges transparency in investigation of Andrie Yunus case
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) is urging transparency in the investigation process of the violence case against KontraS activist Andrie Yunus, including access to question the suspects at the military investigation level.
Komnas HAM Monitoring and Investigation Commissioner Saurlin P Siagian stated that openness is crucial to ensure accountability in handling the ongoing case.
“We are urging transparency in law enforcement,” he said after seeking information from TNI officials at Komnas HAM’s office in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Additionally, Komnas HAM emphasised the importance of disclosing the perpetrators’ identities to the public as part of the openness principle.
“We hope there will soon be an announcement regarding the perpetrators’ identities to the public,” he said.
Saurlin mentioned that the investigation by the TNI Military Police Centre (Puspom) has made significant progress, with four suspects designated and the investigation process claimed to be around 80% complete.
Nevertheless, Komnas HAM assesses that the process still requires external monitoring to proceed objectively and comprehensively, including opening opportunities for independent oversight involvement.
Meanwhile, Komnas HAM Subcommission for Human Rights Enforcement Coordinator Pramono Ubaid Tanthowi added that they have received signals of openness from the military investigators to provide examination access.
“The TNI Puspom side has opened up for us to meet with the suspects,” he said.
He explained that this access is important to delve into various aspects, including the possibility of orders within the operational structure and the investigation process since the handover of evidence from the previous unit.
Komnas HAM also plans to seek statements from experts across fields to strengthen the construction of conclusions in the ongoing investigation.
This step is seen as part of efforts to ensure the legal process runs transparently, accountably, and is able to fully reveal the violent incident that occurred.
