National Human Rights Commission to Summon TNI Chief Regarding Acid Attack Case on Andrie Yunus
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Chair of the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) Anis Hidayah stated that her organisation will soon summon TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto to request an explanation regarding the alleged involvement of TNI members in the acid attack case against Kontras activist Andrie Yunus.
“Komnas HAM will soon summon the TNI Commander to request an explanation regarding the involvement of its members in the Andrie Yunus case as perpetrators,” Anis told reporters on Thursday (19/3/2026).
Anis said that so far, Komnas HAM has conducted intensive coordination with Metro Jaya Police and has obtained several pieces of information related to the suspects and evidence in the case.
However, regarding the difference in suspect initials, she asked that it be confirmed directly with the police and TNI.
According to her, based on police information, the initials BHC and BHW refer to the same person, despite using different naming.
This is because the incident is not related to military service duties, but rather a general criminal offence as regulated in the Criminal Code.
“Because in this case the victim is a civilian, and also a human rights activist who has been advocating for human rights, particularly related to TNI’s work and actions, and the act is regulated under the Criminal Code, not related to military service duties,” Anis explained.
Komnas HAM assesses that the legal process must be conducted transparently, independently, and accountably in accordance with the state’s obligations after ratifying international conventions on civil and political rights.
According to Anis, the general court is deemed more capable of ensuring the openness of the legal process compared to the military court, which tends to be closed.
“We encourage the trial to be transparent, accountable, accessible to the public, and considering the above matters, we want to push for the process to go through the general court,” said Anis.
They come from the TNI’s Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS), namely Captain NDP, Lieutenant SL, Lieutenant BHW, and Sergeant ES.
Nevertheless, the TNI has not disclosed the roles or motives of the perpetrators in the acid attack incident.
