National Gallery Collection Exhibition Opens at Vredeburg Museum

The Museum and Cultural Heritage unit of the Ministry of Culture is exhibiting 28 selected artworks from the National Gallery of Indonesia’s collection at the Vredeburg Fort Museum in Yogyakarta from 27 June to 30 August 2026. The exhibition, titled ‘From Sudjojono to Murniasih: A Selection from the National Gallery of Indonesia’s Collection’, features 23 paintings, four sculptures, and one graphic work by 28 Indonesian artists. Head of the Ministry’s Museum and Cultural Heritage unit, Indira Estiyanti Nurjadin, stated this is the first collaborative exhibition between units, specifically the National Gallery and the Vredeburg Fort Museum, since the Public Service Agency was established four years ago. She expressed hope that the exhibition would make Yogyakarta a centre of attention for the Indonesian art world amidst the Jogja Art Weeks and various other art events. Curator Aminudin TH Siregar noted that the exhibition marks more than a chronological transition from modern to contemporary art, reflecting an ongoing shift in the meaning of freedom and demonstrating how Indonesian fine art continually expands the boundaries of what society is able or willing to see.
