National Figures Visit Sultan HB X at Yogyakarta Palace, What's Happening?

A number of national figures who are members of the Gerakan Nurani Bangsa (GNB) visited the Yogyakarta Palace to meet and hold a dialogue with the Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta and King of the Yogyakarta Palace, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, on Wednesday (23/7/2026). The meeting discussed the national situation, including the decline in public trust in the government and state institutions. The GNB delegation arrived at the Yogyakarta Palace at around 1 p.m. local time. They then immediately held a closed-door meeting with Sultan HB X. The meeting lasted for nearly three hours. Speaking to reporters afterwards, Alissa Wahid, the eldest daughter of Indonesia’s fourth president Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), said the meeting with Sultan HB X was part of GNB’s journey to engage in dialogue with various national figures about the current state of Indonesia. Previously, GNB had also met with the fifth President of Indonesia, Megawati Soekarnoputri. “The first (topic) is of course the current national situation. But secondly, it is because the Yogyakarta Palace’s role in the history of the Indonesian nation has never been small, it has always been significant,” Alissa told reporters at the Yogyakarta Palace on Thursday (23/7/2026). She noted that the Yogyakarta Palace has played a major role in Indonesia’s historical journey, including when Yogyakarta served as the temporary capital of the Republic of Indonesia during a critical situation. Furthermore, Sultan HB X was also one of the figures who played a role in the 1998 reform movement.
