National Figures Launch Petition Against Seizure of Hotel Sultan, from JK to Din Syamsuddin

The controversy surrounding the Hotel Sultan area in Jakarta has intensified. Several national figures have intervened by launching a petition entitled “Reject the Seizure of Hotel Sultan” as a statement on the issue, which is deemed to concern justice and legal certainty.

The launch of the petition took place directly at the Hotel Sultan in Jakarta and was attended by several important figures, including the 10th and 12th Vice President of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla, Din Syamsuddin, Amir Syamsuddin, and former Constitutional Court Chief Justice Hamdan Zoelva.

In their statements, the figures assessed that this dispute is not merely an issue of asset ownership but has broader implications, namely public trust in law enforcement in Indonesia.

Jusuf Kalla emphasised that the resolution of such conflicts should not be done unilaterally but through fair dialogue for all parties.

“Issues like this must not be resolved unilaterally. There must be fair dialogue so as not to disadvantage all parties,” said JK, quoted on Wednesday, 1 April 2026.

He also warned that if not handled fairly, this polemic has the potential to disrupt the business climate in the country.

“If not resolved fairly, this could create distrust and impact the business climate,” he stated.

In agreement, Hamdan Zoelva, who also acts as legal counsel for PT Indobuildco, emphasised that they are not facing the state but rather perceived injustice.

“This is not facing the state, but facing injustice. We hope there is room for dialogue so that this issue can be resolved fairly,” said Hamdan Zoelva.

In the petition, the figures conveyed five important points. Among them, rejecting all forms of seizure of Hotel Sultan without a clear legal basis and without a court decision with final legal force.

In addition, they also reject business restrictions and licence revocations in the midst of ongoing legal processes, as well as unilateral designation of the area as part of Land Management Rights (HPL).

The petition also asserts that any takeover by the state must go through valid legal mechanisms, including providing compensation to rightful owners.
