National ETLE System Now Utilises Face Recognition to Prevent Use of Fake Number Plates

In an effort to enhance the quality of technology-based law enforcement, the Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantras Polri) continues to develop the use of Face Recognition (FR) technology, integrated with various other supporting systems. This technology serves as a vital instrument in anticipating the use of fake number plates, mismatched vehicle identities, and various other modes of traffic violations.

The Head of Korlantas Polri, Inspector General Agus Suryonugroho, emphasised that face recognition technology is part of the National Police’s commitment to realising a modern, data-driven law enforcement system. Through more accurate identification capabilities, this technology can assist officers in verifying the identities of both drivers and vehicles suspected of committing violations.

The use of face recognition also supports the investigation and tracking of vehicles using registration numbers that do not match actual vehicle data. This represents a strategic step in closing loopholes for perpetrators attempting to evade law enforcement through the manipulation of vehicle identities.

The Head of Legal Affairs at Korlantas Polri, Brigadier General Faizal, explained that face recognition technology is becoming increasingly relevant alongside the evolving ETLE system, which relies on the validity of vehicle and owner data. With the support of this technology, officers can perform data analysis and matching more rapidly and accurately.

In addition to supporting law enforcement, face recognition technology serves as a form of protection for law-abiding citizens, ensuring they are not disadvantaged by parties misusing vehicle identities. Korlantas Polri hopes that the implementation of this technology will increase public trust in a transparent and fair traffic law enforcement system.
