National Energy Council Ensures Power Supply During Cirebon Coal Plant Inspection
The National Energy Council (DEN) has confirmed the reliability of the Java-Madura-Bali (Jamali) electricity supply while inspecting the readiness of power plants to support the national energy transition agenda during a working visit to the Cirebon Expansion coal-fired power plant (PLTU).
“We want to ensure the electricity supply is maintained and directly identify any obstacles that require attention,” said DEN Stakeholder Member Muhammad Kholid Syeirazi in an official statement confirmed by ANTARA from Jakarta on Saturday.
The working visit was a rapid response by DEN to various issues concerning electricity availability in the Jamali system, which is currently facing challenges.
According to Kholid, coal-fired power plants still play a dominant role in the national electricity system. Of the total operating generation capacity, the contribution of coal-fired steam power plants still exceeds 60 percent in supporting the electricity system.
Nevertheless, the government has established a long-term policy direction to balance the national energy mix by increasing the utilisation of new and renewable energy (EBT).
“Currently, the share of EBT in the generation mix is still around 15.6 percent. Going forward, we encourage that the composition of generation is no longer dominated by fossil energy. In line with national policy direction, by 2060 the generation mix is targeted to be dominated by EBT at around 70 percent,” he said.
Kholid explained that, in addition to reviewing the operational performance of the plant, DEN also wanted to see the various efforts undertaken by the Cirebon Expansion PLTU to support the decarbonisation agenda.
“We want to see firsthand the process and performance of the plant at the Cirebon Expansion PLTU, explore the decarbonisation agenda being prepared, including aspects of energy efficiency, thermal efficiency, and emission mitigation measures carried out by the company,” he said.
Furthermore, Kholid emphasised that the government has set the national energy transition direction through Government Regulation Number 40 of 2025 on the National Energy Policy. This regulation targets a gradual increase in the EBT mix to reach 70–72 percent by 2060 as part of efforts to achieve Net Zero Emission (NZE).
“In this context, we hope PT Cirebon Energi Prasarana can take a strategic role in supporting the national energy transition through the development and utilisation of energy that is increasingly based on green energy. This is a tangible contribution to strengthening energy security while reducing dependence on fossil energy,” Kholid said.
DEN’s visit to the Cirebon Expansion PLTU is expected to be part of efforts to ensure a balance between maintaining the reliability of the current national electricity supply and accelerating the transformation towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy system in the future.
