National Elderly Day 2026: 560 Inmates Over 70 Granted Remission
560 elderly inmates over the age of 70 received remission on National Elderly Day 2026. Eligible inmates must have chronic illnesses, demonstrate good behaviour, actively participate in rehabilitation programs, and pose reduced risk as part of special attention for elderly prisoners.
The remission duration ranges from one to six months. This year, 85 inmates received a one-month reduction, 108 for two months, 170 for three months, 96 for four months, 79 for five months, and 22 for six months.
Director General of Corrections Mashudi explained that under Law No. 1 of 2023 on the New Criminal Code (KUHP), inmates aged 70 receive special attention, particularly regarding humanitarian remission. Humanitarian remission is also regulated under Law No. 22 of 2022 on Corrections and its implementation.
“The granting of age-based remission is a form of humanitarian consideration previously in practice and now reinforced by regulation. The aim is to motivate and rehabilitate, while demonstrating the state’s concern for elderly inmates. The new Criminal Code prioritises more humane sentencing, not merely retribution, but focusing on rehabilitation and development,” Mashudi stated.
Of the 560 inmates receiving remission over 70, the highest number came from the West Java Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections with 73 inmates, followed by East Java with 63, and North Sumatra with 39.
The total savings in inmate meal costs after the remission was Rp 1,183,860,000.
“We hope this sentence reduction benefits elderly inmates and their families as they serve the remainder of their rehabilitation period,” Mashudi said.
