National Education Day Protest Crowd Disperses, Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan Reopens

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The crowd from the National Education Day action by the BEM SI Alliance dispersed on Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, Central Jakarta, on Saturday afternoon (2/5/2026). Kompas.com observations at the site indicated that they dispersed around 6:15 PM WIB. Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan was then reopened. Motorists could once again pass through the road that had been closed by police. Subsequently, the Central Coordinator of the BEM SI Alliance, Muzammil Ihsan, stated that students would hold another action on Monday (4/5/2026). “Because today’s action was not accepted, no one listened to us, no officials wanted to meet us, so on Monday we will return, we will keep coming and multiply with greater escalation,” Muzammil declared from atop the command vehicle. Afterwards, the Central Coordinator of the BEM for Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah Indonesia Universities, Yogi Alaydrus, continued reading his organisation’s statement of position. Following that, the students dispersed orderly towards the IRTI Monas while singing struggle songs and shouting chants. Previously reported, the BEM SI Alliance crowd held a rally commemorating National Education Day (Hardiknas) on Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, Saturday afternoon (2/5/2026).
