National Children's Day 2026: A Call to Protect and Build the Future
The commemoration of National Children’s Day on 23 July 2026 serves as a crucial moment to strengthen the commitment of all elements of the nation to fulfil children’s rights while providing them with optimal protection. This observance is not merely an annual ceremonial agenda but a reminder that children are national assets who must be guarded, guided, and prepared for the future. Indonesian children play a strategic role as the next generation that will determine the direction of national development, particularly in realising the vision of a Golden Indonesia 2045. Therefore, efforts to create a safe, healthy, and inclusive environment that supports children’s growth and development are a shared responsibility, spanning families, communities, the education sector, the business world, and the government. Amidst technological advancements and increasingly complex social challenges, child protection has become a more pressing issue. Various problems such as violence against children, bullying, exploitation, discrimination, child marriage, and threats in the digital space require attention and cooperation from all parties to ensure children can thrive optimally. The observance of National Children’s Day has a strong legal foundation. The initial step for child protection in Indonesia began with the ratification of Law Number 4 of 1979 concerning Child Welfare on 23 July 1979. Based on that date, the government subsequently designated 23 July as National Children’s Day through Presidential Decree Number 44 of 1984. The theme for the 2026 commemoration carries three interconnected messages aimed at realising child protection and welfare. The first message is ‘Love Children’. This phrase affirms that every child is a valuable individual with the right to be respected, heard, and have their basic rights fulfilled. Showing affection to children is not only about meeting material needs but also involves positive parenting, open and empathetic communication, emotional support, and the creation of a safe, comfortable, and attentive family and community environment. Affection given from an early age significantly influences character development, mental health, and a child’s ability to build social relationships in the future. Therefore, the family serves as the primary environment playing a crucial role in shaping a child’s personality. The second message is ‘Protect’. This message emphasises that child protection is a shared responsibility, not solely that of parents, but also of all stakeholders, including the government, schools, communities, media, and the wider public. A safe environment provides space for children to learn, play, create, and develop their potential without fear. The third message is ‘Build the Future’. This message embodies the belief that the best investment for the nation is to provide all Indonesian children with the opportunity to grow and develop to their maximum potential. Building a child’s future is achieved through the fulfilment of rights to quality education, adequate health services, good nutrition, social protection, and opportunities to participate in various activities appropriate to their age and abilities. Children also need to be equipped with critical thinking skills, creativity, digital literacy, and strong character to face future challenges. Efforts to build children’s futures are also in line with the aspirations of Golden Indonesia 2045, when the nation will celebrate a century of independence. A healthy, intelligent, character-driven, and protected generation is the primary capital for realising sustainable national development. Through the theme ‘Love Children, Protect and Build the Future’, National Children’s Day 2026 is expected to raise collective awareness across society that child protection is not solely the government’s task but a shared responsibility. By providing love, protection, and opportunities for every child to develop, Indonesia can prepare a generation capable of facing global challenges while leading the nation towards a more advanced and prosperous future.
