Natalius Pigai Sends Team to Dogiyai, Central Papua

The Ministry of Human Rights has visited Dogiyai Regency, Central Papua Province, following the shooting incident involving Dogiyai residents by members of the Dogiyai Resort Police on 31 March and 1 April 2026. “I have ordered them to go to Dogiyai and am awaiting the report from the regional office,” said Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai in a brief message to Tempo on Monday, 6 April 2026. Pigai stated that the Ministry of Human Rights team is currently in Nabire and will continue their journey to Dogiyai. The Ministry of Human Rights is visiting Dogiyai for an audience with the community after the situation heated up. This plan was confirmed by Okto Pekei, a Mee Pago indigenous community figure. “Tomorrow there will be an audience with people from or staff of the Ministry of Human Rights,” said Okto on Sunday, 5 April 2026. Okto said the Ministry of Human Rights is coming to ensure the conditions in Dogiyai and to cross-check reports from residents and police. Previously, the security situation in Moanemani City and Dogiyai Regency was tense after Second Brigadier Juventus Edowai was killed on Tuesday, 31 March 2026. Police officers, who found Juventus’s body in a ditch at Ebenezer Church on Tuesday morning, were allegedly emotional and vented their anger on nearby residents. Several police then combed through residents’ settlements while firing shots. Five civilians were killed by the gunfire, two of whom were elderly and children. Neither the National Police Headquarters nor the Central Papua Regional Police have disclosed the civilian victims or the motive for the shooting. However, the National Police Headquarters has sent 148 combined personnel to Central Papua, including 100 Brimob personnel, 10 personnel from the Intelligence and Security Agency (BIK) team, and 20 personnel from the Criminal Investigation Agency team.
