NasDem's Response to Merger with Gerindra
Jakarta, VIVA – Saan Mustopa, Deputy Chairman of the NasDem Party’s Central Board, explained the issue of his party’s merger with Gerindra. He admitted that he had only just heard about the rumour.
“Yes, I was also surprised by this; it’s only just emerged regarding the merger issue. Even in political terms, it’s a fusion, not a merger or acquisition. A fusion between Gerindra and NasDem,” said Saan to reporters at the Senayan Parliamentary Complex, Jakarta, on Monday, 13 April 2025.
Saan stated that fusion is a common occurrence in the world of politics. Because, he continued, in 1973 many political parties underwent fusions.
According to him, a fusion is an idea or concept that has been considered and refined.
“We also had fusions back in ’73, right? From numerous parties becoming three parties in ’73. And as an idea, as a concept, it’s certainly something that’s considered or thought about as normal,” he said.
Regarding the rumour of a NasDem and Gerindra fusion, Saan explained that many considerations must be taken into account, from ideology to the existence of both parties.
“Because building or establishing a party, the founders of each party certainly have their own idealism, ideas, concepts, and ideology in different contexts. So, if there’s a plan or discourse regarding a fusion, those factors also need to be considered: ideology, identity, and the existence of each party,” he said.
According to him, the founders of a party have their own ideas and concepts. Therefore, a party fusion must go through many considerations based on spirit, motivation, and philosophy.
“When we want to realise many things, a lot must be thought about; it must be discussed, planned,” said Saan.
“Once again, a party is a reflection of the idealism, ideas, aspirations, and even ideology of its founders,” he added.
