NasDem's Alleged Intent to Sideline PSI Drives Push for Higher Parliamentary Threshold

The Director of Indonesian Political Parameters, Adi Prayitno, has assessed that the NasDem Party’s proposal to raise the parliamentary threshold from 4 per cent to 7 per cent in the revision of the Election Law is being read as an attempt to obstruct the Indonesian Solidarity Party’s (PSI) path to the House of Representatives in the 2029 general election.

This is due to the dynamics of political competition between NasDem and PSI, as quoted from rmol.id on Friday, 17 July 2026.

“There is a political fact that the public then interprets — perhaps the NasDem Party faction’s proposal to raise the parliamentary threshold from 4 per cent to 7 per cent has only one aim, namely blocking PSI so that it does not make it into parliament in 2029,” he said.

This perception has emerged because a number of figures who were previously an important part of NasDem have instead joined PSI.

Adi cited the example of PSI Executive Chairman Ahmad Ali, who was previously one of NasDem’s senior officials.

In addition, there is Bestari Barus and several other former NasDem cadres who have chosen PSI.
