NasDem Rejects KPK Proposal to Limit Political Party Leaders' Terms: It Is the Party's Right

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - NasDem Party General Treasurer Ahmad Sahroni has rejected the Corruption Eradication Commission’s (KPK) proposal urging a limit on the tenure of political party leaders to a maximum of two terms.

Sahroni emphasised that the tenure of party leaders is entirely within the purview of each political party and cannot be interfered with by external parties.

“Whether two, three terms or even forever, that is the decision of each political party. It is the right of the political parties and cannot be meddled with,” Sahroni said when contacted on Wednesday (22/4/2026).

He added that all mechanisms, processes, and dynamics related to leadership within the party are internal matters.

It was previously reported that the KPK, through its Monitoring Directorate, proposed limiting the tenure of political party leaders to a maximum of two management terms.

This proposal stems from the KPK’s study on political party governance, which found a lack of integrated cadre development standards within party structures.

“To ensure the implementation of cadre development, regulations are needed to limit the leadership tenure of party leaders to a maximum of two management periods,” stated the KPK’s Monitoring Directorate on Wednesday.

In addition to term limits, the KPK has proposed that the Ministry of Home Affairs develop standardisation and an integrated reporting system for party cadre development linked to political party funding (banpol).

Furthermore, the anti-corruption agency has suggested several changes in the revision of Article 29 of Law No. 2 of 2011 on Political Parties.

Among them are categorising party members into youth, intermediate, and senior members, as well as clearer regulations on cadre progression for prospective legislative candidates.

The KPK also proposed that presidential, vice-presidential, and regional head candidates come from the party cadre system, along with minimum membership duration requirements before nomination.
