NasDem Legislator Says Proposal to Move Women's KRL Carriages is Not a Solution
Minister for Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) Arifah Fauzi has proposed moving the women’s carriage to the middle of the train following the accident between the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek and KRL at Bekasi Timur Station. Member of Commission VIII from the NasDem Faction in the DPR, Dini Rahmania, assessed the proposal as not a solution.
“I am certainly very saddened by the train accident incident, especially since we heard that the majority of the victims were women. This is a shared grief and must be a serious concern for all parties,” Dini told reporters on Tuesday (28/4/2026).
Nevertheless, Dini disagreed with the proposal to move the women’s carriage to the middle of the train. She stated that other victims could emerge, including family heads, with that solution.
“Regarding the proposal to move the women’s carriage to the middle of the train, in my view, it is not a solution that touches the root of the problem, because when this condition occurs after the women’s carriage has been moved to the middle, the victims that emerge would not only be a mother, but could also be the head of the family,” she said.
She views that the government needs to look at this issue more broadly. According to her, the initial placement of the women’s carriage at the back or front of the train was to facilitate waiting for the train’s arrival.
“We need to look at this problem more comprehensively, not just from the aspect of carriage placement. Because from my perspective, placing the carriage at the very front and back can make it easier to position oneself while waiting for the train; if placed in the middle, it might cause confusion because the number of carriages on the train is not the same,” she stated.
Dini also emphasised that the key to safety lies in obedience and compliance with rules from all parties. “Both from the side of four-wheeled/two-wheeled vehicle drivers and road users around the railway tracks,” she added.
On that basis, she views that efforts are needed to strengthen discipline and evaluate the safety system.
“So, what needs to be strengthened is discipline, supervision, and the overall safety system. Proposals like that can be discussion material, but do not let it divert our focus from the main issue, which is how to prevent accidents from recurring,” she remarked.
Previously, Minister PPPA Arifah Fauzi proposed placing the KRL women’s carriage in the middle of the train. That proposal stemmed from the fatal collision between the Argo Bromo train and KRL at Bekasi Timur Station.
“But with this incident, we propose that if possible, the women’s carriage be placed in the middle,” Arifah told reporters after visiting victims at Bekasi City Hospital, on Tuesday (28/4).
