Ketua DPP NasDem and member of the House of Representatives Commission IX, Irma Suryani Chaniago, has responded to allegations that healthcare workers insulted a BPJS patient who complained about waiting eight hours for an inpatient room. Irma stated that the individuals involved lack moral integrity and empathy.

‘Healthcare workers like this do not embody their profession; they have no morals or empathy. I have conveyed to the Ministry of Health that the hospital management should sanction these individuals,’ Irma told reporters on Wednesday (5/8/2026).

Irma said the individuals should have been ashamed rather than mocking the patient. She confirmed she had communicated with the Ministry of Health regarding the matter. ‘Yes, they should be ashamed, not laughing. I have communicated with the Ministry of Health. Alhamdulillah, these individuals will be sanctioned,’ she said.

The case emerged after a BPJS patient named Yurizal Tri Chaerawan shared his experience on social media, which subsequently went viral. On 22 July 2026, via his Threads account @yurizaltrich, Yurizal stated he had been waiting for an inpatient room for eight hours. In his post, he did not disclose the name of the hospital where he was being treated.

‘8 hours and still no room. I don’t want to name the hospital because I’m using BPJS,’ Yurizal wrote.

Instead of receiving sympathy, the post was flooded with insulting comments. Some accounts even suggested Yurizal move to the mortuary to get a room faster. There were also comments joking about serious illnesses and self-harm.

A number of accounts that wrote these comments are suspected to be doctors, nurses, or other healthcare workers based on information listed on their social media profiles. However, the identities and professions of the account owners have not yet been fully verified.

The discussion widened after Yurizal was reported to have passed away on 31 July 2026. The sad news was shared by his cousin on social media, causing his old post to go viral once again.
