NASA to use AI and drones to build lunar base
Washington (ANTARA) - The US space agency NASA plans to use drones and artificial intelligence (AI) technology to build a permanent base on the Moon and support exploration of Earth’s natural satellite.
NASA Moon Base Program Executive Carlos Garcia-Galan said AI could be used to operate drones, such as exploring and mapping areas to determine safe landing sites.
“I think AI will be very helpful to us in that regard,” he said in an interview with RIA Novosti published on Monday (1 June).
According to Garcia-Galan, NASA is still in the very early stages of the Moon base project, so various systems are being developed through testing and refinement.
“We are still at the beginning of the process. Currently, we are building systems, determining the types of instruments to be used, and the drones being used are only at the initial stage,” he said.
The first phase includes sending transport vehicles to the Moon and constructing basic infrastructure for power supply, scientific research, and communication.
The second phase will focus on developing habitable infrastructure and logistics systems resembling Earth conditions through collaboration with international space agencies.
The final phase aims to enable long-term human presence on the lunar surface.
