Lead author of the study from the University of Iceland, Angel Ruiz-Angulo, likened the SWOT data to a new pair of glasses for scientists. Before this technology, tsunami monitoring relied heavily on DART (Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis) buoys, which only provide data at specific points. The SWOT satellite, launched in December 2022 through a collaboration between NASA and the French space agency CNES, is capable of capturing a 120-kilometre-wide swath of the sea surface with high resolution, allowing researchers to observe wave dispersion phenomena in detail. This new understanding of complex tsunami behaviour is considered vital for countries situated along the Ring of Fire, including Indonesia. With more accurate data on how waves interact and propagate, early warning systems can be developed to predict impacts on coastal areas with greater precision.
