NASA Opens Registration for Mars Mission Simulation, Here Are the Requirements

The United States space agency NASA is looking for volunteers to live in a simulation of a journey between Earth and Mars for a year. Space travel is an extremely difficult activity. With various future projects, humans need to understand how people travel and adapt to new environments.

The NASA programme combines the Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA) mission and the Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) mission. Those selected will undergo experiences related to space travel, including the conditions, environment, and tasks of astronauts.

The programme will begin in August 2027. Participants will live in isolation and confinement in a facility built at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, United States. The mission will then transition to a surface habitat phase, where crew performance will be studied under conditions of limited resources and the demands of a mission on another planet.

The simulated spacecraft includes private crew quarters, shared workspaces, recreation areas, a plant cultivation zone, a medical bay, a food preparation area, an airlock, a bathroom, and an external area for simulated surface walks. NASA added that a rover module is attached to the main habitat, containing two driver seats, two beds, a toilet, and an airlock.

The simulation results are expected to help evaluate and validate hardware, technologies, protocols, requirements, and other systems that support crew health and performance during long-duration missions. All data obtained from the simulation will be used in NASA’s Human Research Programme, including to assist related missions such as the future Artemis programme.
