The Head of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), Komjen Suyudi Ario Seto, has proposed that the agency be granted wiretapping authority starting from the investigation stage. BNN seeks special provisions for wiretapping to dismantle drug trafficking networks.

“We view it necessary to discuss special investigation techniques, including wiretapping, controlled delivery, and undercover purchases,” Suyudi stated at the working meeting of the DPR’s Commission III regarding the Narcotics and Psychotropics Bill on Tuesday (7/4/2026).

Suyudi also addressed the clause in the new KUHAP that emphasises wiretapping authority only at the prosecution stage. According to him, wiretapping during the investigation phase is important for seeking evidence of criminal acts.

“However, what we consider most crucial is the substance in the new KUHAP, which locks wiretapping authority only at the prosecution stage. In fact, this authority should also be very important to carry out at the investigation stage,” he said.

He assessed that granting wiretapping authority from the initial stage could serve as initial material or screening to determine legal status and actions. He stated that this wiretapping authority is expected to map criminal networks.

“Considering the characteristics of drug crimes that operate very quietly, BNN emphasises the urgency for special investigation techniques, including wiretapping, to be legally carried out from the investigation stage,” Suyudi said.

“This step aligns with the strategic views of the Indonesian National Police and has been supported by the KUHAP, which provides room for wiretapping actions to be regulated separately or as lex specialis in the Narcotics Bill,” he added.
