The United States Department of Defense has reportedly raised its assessment regarding espionage threats conducted by Israel. According to reports from several media outlets citing US intelligence and defence officials, the Pentagon has now placed this threat level into the highest category, namely ‘critical’.

This assessment, first published by NBC News last Friday and followed by an article in The New York Times (NYT), surfaced amidst diplomatic efforts being undertaken by Washington with Iran. Conversely, Israel, as a US ally, is strongly opposing these negotiations, which are aimed at ending the conflict that enters its 100th day this Sunday.

US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have openly demonstrated differing approaches to handling this war. Amidst domestic political pressure, Washington seeks to distance itself from the conflict as soon as possible. In contrast, Israel continues to push for the overthrow of the Iranian government.

This is not the first time Tel Aviv has been accused of espionage against the US—which is not only its closest ally but also its primary supporter, with both nations maintaining extensive security and intelligence cooperation.

Quoting Al Jazeera, Rob Geist Pinfold, an analyst from King’s College London, suggests that Tehran is likely to view these latest developments as a form of ‘discord and miscalculation between enemies.’

According to Professor Pinfold, this situation could be viewed as advantageous for Tehran. However, he warned that this dynamic also carries serious risks for Iran.

‘This also shows that Israel is becoming more prone or vulnerable to going rogue… and essentially taking unilateral steps without coordination with the US,’ he stated.
