Nameless isles in Riau

PALEMBANG, South Sumatra: Over three-quarters of the 3,214 islands in the province of Riau have not yet been named.

Riau provincial legislator Djufri Hasan Basri revealed during a visit to Palembang yesterday that only 714 have been named.

"We either haven't got around to naming them or they simply aren't inhabited," he was quoted by Antara as having said.

The province of Riau covers an area of 329,868 square kilometers, most of which is water. The population of the province is approximately 4.2 million.
