Jakarta, VIVA – The former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Mendikbudristek) for the 2019-2024 period, Nadiem Makarim, appeared wearing a Gojek jacket while attending the reading of the defence statement (pleidoi) in the Chromebook procurement corruption case at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court on Tuesday, 2 June 2026.

Nadiem arrived at the Central Jakarta District Court complex around 09:00 WIB wearing a light blue long-sleeved batik. After making a statement to journalists in the lobby area, he subsequently put on an ‘ojol’ (motorcycle taxi) jacket belonging to Mulyono, Gojek driver 001.

Ahead of the hearing, Nadiem stated that his legal team had prepared all the defence material to be presented before the panel of judges. “All preparations have been made. We have truly prepared all the facts,” Nadiem told the media on Tuesday, 2 June 2020.

According to him, the case involving him differs from typical corruption cases. He assessed that not only have some elements of the indictment failed to be proven, but all the elements alleged against him lack a strong evidentiary basis. Therefore, Nadiem said, the legal counsel team will comprehensively outline various facts deemed capable of refuting the prosecutor’s indictments during the plea reading session.

“I am grateful to God Almighty for giving me the opportunity today in a relatively healthier condition to voice the plea along with my legal counsel team,” he said.

Based on information from the Case Tracking Information System (SIPP) of the Central Jakarta District Court, the plea reading agenda was scheduled for 10:00 WIB, presided over by a panel of judges led by Purwanto Abdullah. During the trial, the defence statements will be presented alternately by Nadiem and his legal team. The trial process can also be viewed by the public via live broadcast on the official YouTube channel of the Central Jakarta District Court.

Nadiem is one of the defendants in the alleged corruption case involving the education digitalisation programme related to the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM) within the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology during the 2019 to 2022 period. Previously, the public prosecutor sought an 18-year prison sentence for Nadiem. Additionally, he was ordered to pay a fine of Rp1 billion, which, if unpaid, would be replaced by 190 days of imprisonment. The prosecutor also demanded the payment of restitution amounting to Rp5.67 trillion, with a subsidiary sentence of nine years in prison.
